Tùy vào hình dạng graphite có 3 loại:
+ Gang xám: Graphite dạng tấm
+ Gang cầu: Graphite dạng hình cầu
+ Gang dẻo: Graphite có dạng cụm bông (giống bông hoa).

Tùy vào mức độ graphite hóa có 3 loại:
* Gang xám ferit: G tấm trên nền ferit.

* Gang xám ferit + peclit: Gtấm trên nền ferit+peclit

* Gang xám peclit: G tấm trên nền peclit.
